First Gig Is Over

Phew! If you weren't at the Hard Rock in Pittsburgh last night, then you missed it. The pic's courtesy of my nephew, Ryan. Thanks, Ryan!

Uptown Rhythm and Brass

Uptown Rhythm and Brass played the Hard Rock last night as Donnie Iris waltzed in halfway through our second set. It was an amazing experience with quite a crowd. I hope we get to play there again soon.

Temporal Image Browsing With F-Spot

The F-Spot work going on with Mono is stunning. Check out the temporal slider for lack of a better term at the top of the right-most pane in the screenshot. That's some amazing UI work from a number of perspectives. I'm not a fan of custom control hackery in general, but this is really evolving the state of the art in a way that is intuitive and immediately useful. Reminds me of the first time that I saw Bederson's work on Photomesa.

Patterns And Abstractions, Oh My!

Sam Ruby:
A toddler can often recognize a cat by pattern. It is not until high school or college that a teenager understands the classification of felis domesticus.
Read Sam's comparison of patterns vs. abstractions here. It's thought provoking.

Earthlink Gets It All Wrong

From this TechWeb article, Jerry Grasso, EarthLink's director of corporate communications said:
"Flash lets us build a rich new application, the first in the business that duplicates the desktop e-mail client experience on the Web."
And this is simply wrong. What part of "oddpost did it three years ago" don't these people understand?

Google Maps Walking Tour of Keene, NH

Jon Udell's got a really interesting screencast of a walking tour of Keene, NH. This does indeed look like the future - enabling people to build their own applications fronting the map and geolocation data. I envision this with slightly less screen real estate appropriated to the map, and a separate pane to display the actual images, video, etc. as the map is navigated. A two-way interface would allow me to see the map location of any image or video, and conversely allow me to query all the images from a given location radius.
