Temporal Image Browsing With F-Spot

The F-Spot work going on with Mono is stunning. Check out the temporal slider for lack of a better term at the top of the right-most pane in the screenshot. That's some amazing UI work from a number of perspectives. I'm not a fan of custom control hackery in general, but this is really evolving the state of the art in a way that is intuitive and immediately useful. Reminds me of the first time that I saw Bederson's work on Photomesa.

Patterns And Abstractions, Oh My!

Sam Ruby:
A toddler can often recognize a cat by pattern. It is not until high school or college that a teenager understands the classification of felis domesticus.
Read Sam's comparison of patterns vs. abstractions here. It's thought provoking.
